About the Ranch

• Big Oak Ranch is a small part of the original 9000 acre Rancho Ojo de Agua de la Coche, acquired by Martin Murphy in 1845.
• Diana Avenue, which ends at the ranch, is named after Murphy's granddaughter.
• Through the mid-1800's, the original ranch more than doubled in size, but was subsequently subdivided and sold off into much smaller pieces.
• The valley portions of the ranch were put into production in crops, orchards, and vineyards, while the hillsides were used to graze cattle.
• The current parcel was subdivided in the 1940's to 100 acres, and further divided to the present 57 acres in the 1960's.
• Up into the 1960's, the land was used as a cattle ranch. From the mid 1960's, the ranch has been in continuous use in the care of horses.
